The gates of heaven are here in downtown Minneapolis so you can enjoy a to-die-for sinfully sweet experience. Having a bakery downtown is a gift and a curse. A major benefit is being located in the midst of tens of thousands of workers that are donut hungry. Business meetings, lunch and learns, client visits and just plain donut lovers are within walking distance of Angel Food. The downside of the downtown scene… weekends and holidays. Non working days conjure up an environment as silent as a clip from “A Quite Place” and can be slow for most places. However, Angel Food is one of the only major bakeries in downtown Minneapolis and they’ve created a name for themselves that brings in customers every day of the week.

They’ve only been around since 2012 after $18,000 of crowdfunding, but in that time, they’ve been recognized in the media and have made a presence in the community. In the media, their Bourbon Whiskey Caramel Donut Bread Pudding Loaf was featured on The Cooking Channel’s Unique Sweets TV Show and co-owner and head pastry chef, Katy Gerdes, was a contestant in Beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network. Around Minneapolis, they take part in over 10 weddings per weekend and nearly set the world record for the tallest stack of donuts during the S.T.E.M-themed MEA festivities at the Mall of America.

They believe “life is better with sprinkles and the tongues need to live an interesting life.” I agree 100%. Maybe not about the sprinkles, which are overrated IMO, but new, interesting tastes and flavors bring such an exciting aspect to food you won’t find from fitness buffs who preach chicken breast, rice and broccoli. Life is short and I want to enjoy a donut that’s crafted by pastry chefs with a unique twist and flavor profile that I dream of. Don’t get me wrong, health and fitness is important, but you shouldn’t restrict yourself from enjoying the finer things in life… donuts! The creations that Katy and her team introduce are new, extraordinary concepts and flavors that preserving the original and classic feel baked goods are all about. From donuts, cakes, cupcakes, loaves, cookies brownies, pretzels and scones, Angel Food has it all. It may be tough to make it downtown during the work week, but their website allows you to order for pickup and even have the ability to get anything delivered (within reason). It’s a business that’s been around the block and knows how to keep up with the high demand their customers desire.

In terms of the quality of their donuts, the dough is a classic taste and texture that doesn’t disappoint. Their fillings and flavors however, is where they exceed expectations. A couple fillings I’ve been blown away by are: peanut butter silk, lemon ricotta cream cheese, salted caramel buttercream and a caramel-cheddar mix inspired by Chicago style popcorn. If you’re not intrigued and don’t have an itch to go to Angel Food right now, we can’t be friends. They're whipped up by experiences bakers in their open layout kitchen where you can watch everyuthing being made; one of the other reasons I love this place. This Jabronie can sit at the bar, enjoy a donut, all while watching the staff glaze, pipe, fill and decorate their donut. So go tell your boss you’re feeling sick, head to Angel Food and walk through the gates of heaven for a donut you won’t forget.
