Sleepy V’s is another “New Kid on the Block” when it comes to donuts. They are the newest to the Twin Cities who opened their doors in the Sheridan neighborhood in NE Minneapolis in October of 2017. They were able to raise $17,000 through Kickstarter which got the ball rolling. Thank you contributors! Once the benchmark was reached, owners Kiah Gumeringer and Vince Traver got to work. Their approach and mindset is simple, “life is too short to be basic.” They love to have fun with donuts, social media and artwork which they have around the shop from local artists. Getting out of their comfort zone by trying wacky flavors is what they hope for us to experience.

Inside the long and narrow shop is a bar with 7 stools where donut connoisseurs can order up everything from donuts, ice cream, coffee or seasonal drinks and chat with the employees. The space at the bar reminds me a lot of those days back in college when you’d hang out at the bar, drink with your buddies, and make horrible decisions, but only this time you get drunk on donuts, not booze. It’s a place you feel comfortable in and feel welcomed as soon as you step foot inside or even on the patio (yes, there’s a patio)!

When it comes to their donuts, business was rolling right away with their mini donuts of wacky flavor combinations and fun names each one had. However, once the initial craze dwindled down, Sleepy V’s realized that people wanted more of a variety than just mini donuts. Because, lets be real here, we're Americans who love our sugar, want extra-large serving sizes and anything highly calorific, and of course, an Instagram worthy photo. So what did they do? They responded and gave the people what they asked for: raised glazed donuts, filled donuts, fritters, and even fried cinnamon rolls or Rollnuts as they call them.

Mini donuts stayed on the shelf for obvious reasons, it’s what they were known for and it started their business, but the time came for the big boys. The honey glazed ring donut is where it all started. It took a small twist on the classic glaze by incorporating honey (bold move Sleepy V’s) but it worked! The flavor peaked my interest and surprised my taste buds even though I knew exactly what it was. The texture was slightly sticky from the honey, which I’ll let pass, but it wasn’t overpowering and had a true honey flavor. Filled donuts hit the menu as well including the Raspberry Cream Cheese and my favorite, the Brown Butter Bismarck (both pictured below). So for donut lovers of all shapes and sizes, go check out Sleepy V's in NE MPLS.
